When I was a sophomore at South High in Torrance, California, I was made the Captain of the drill team. This had never happened, in fact, the school had a policy about not letting you try out for Captain unless you were a senior. So I tried out for Lieutenant and made 1st Lieutenant, the spot just under the Captain. It went Captain, 1st and 2nd Lieutenant and then the Sergeant. This group of girls was in charge of making up all the routines and leading the squad. Well, during that summer, our elected Captain became pregnant and had to attend the reform high school. So I was bumped up to Captain, and we had to hold tryouts for a new Sergeant. When I became Captain, we started a routine of bringing a pair of baby shoes to practice. The member who performed the best all week was given the privilege and keeping the shoes for a week. She could add any little trinket or sticker or even write on the shoes if she wanted. By the end of the year, I got to keep the booties.
When morale is low
And no one cares
Just watching the show
In uninterested stares
That’s when this device
Comes in most handy
Nothing else will suffice
But these most dandy
SPIRIT BOOTIES
Lifts us from the blues
When you get these
Your energy flows
Hands will seize
You’re now the pro
For one whole week
This pair is yours
To add to them not meek
But a trinket that roars
SPIRIT BOOTIES
Just a pair of baby shoes
SPIRIT BOOTIES
Lifts us from the blues
And no one cares
Just watching the show
In uninterested stares
That’s when this device
